Fresh Take:

Doug Polk's Code Doug Challenge Falters, but He Manages to Escape the Red

In a thrilling month filled with high stakes and intense competition, Upswing Poker founder, Doug Polk, set out to win $100K to share with his fans. However, things didn't go as planned, and Polk found himself swimming in the red, fearing the humiliation of ending his challenge in a financial hole.

As the challenges escalated, Polk's regular updates on social media were met with constant heckling from his nemesis, Eric Persson. The possibility of a trash-talking grudge match between the two was enough to get everyone talking.

In the end, we did get a confrontation, albeit a friendly one. Persson demonstrated great sportsmanship, respecting Polk's status in the poker world.

Doug Polk and Eric Persson Face Off

After a grueling three weeks, Polk found himself $49,754 in the red on WPT Club Gold, staring at the prospect of ending his challenge in the red. The $100K Challenge had been rebranded the $0 Challenge, with the goal now being to aim for the green.

In the closing week, Polk mounted a valiant comeback, climbing back to $18,652 in profit. However, with just one session remaining, he needed to win exactly $81,348. Quite the challenge, even for a player with Polk's pedigree.

With a two-hour showdown against Persson planned for the finale, anything could happen – much like the infamous Phil Hellmuth's infamous playoff against Norwegian poker pro, Harald Stocker, in 2014.

Polk had a forfeit of shaving his head or dyeing his hair platinum blonde on the line, but now there was the possibility of having to drive a beat-up car for a month during the summer as well.

Eric Persson Strikes First

With a highly aggressive match seeming almost inevitable, the two hours of play were set to be action-packed. As it turned out, Persson made the first move, dealing Polk a devastating cooler just minutes into the match. Polk's 7♦ 5♦ straight up against Persson's 9♠ 5♠ for a better straight sent a $37,626 pot in Persson's direction.

The trash talk was in full swing, and Polk eventually found his rhythm, taking the lead. However, Persson was relentless, reclaiming the advantage with a $20,000 lead and stepping up the heckling.

But Polk wasn't ready to give up yet, and with just 45 minutes left to play, he clawed his way back to break even, leaving him with a clear shot at beating Persson for the day's play.

With the target in sight, Polk cranked up the aggression to unprecedented levels, and it paid off. A three-bet with queen-ten looked like it might secure the win, but a river four brought Persson another straight, and he didn't pay off.

This left Polk $16,690 behind Persson for the two-hour session, but he did manage to make $1,421 in profit for the last 160 hours of play. Not exactly a payday to celebrate, but better than expected, considering the circumstances.

So, let's see what kind of clunker Persson has lined up for Polk to drive this summer!
